Here the word cow is important. Cow has been worshipped for thousands of centuries. Therefore here importance is given to Protection of Cow and Prohibition of Cow slaughtering is mentioned. Cow Slautering is prohibited not only in this Mantra but other Mantras too, like Yajurved 13.9,13.43, and Rig Ved 1.164.40. Go mata is compared with Dev Mata Aditi in Yajurved 13.43. Also in Bhagwatam says that one who does slaughtering will go Praanrodhak Hell. Also Cow in the form of wealth was use worthy at that time.

 

Gau Puja

अ॒स्माकं॑ शि॒प्रिणी॑नां॒ सोम॑पाः सोम॒पाव्नां॑ । सखे॑ वज्रि॒न्त्सखी॑नां ॥

Translation: सोमपाः – Protector of Somras. सखे – Dear like a friend. वाञ्जिन् – With Vajra. सखीनाम् – Dear like a friend. सोमपाब्नाम् – Protector of Som. अस्माकम् – Ours. शिप्रीणाम् – With a long nose.

Explanation:Oh the protector of Som!Dear as a friend ! The one with Vajra!We request you to provide us cows with the best face. May Your friendly attitude be with us forever.
