Do you know how this powerful Mahamrityunjaya mantra originated? There will be many of you who have no idea about this. So let us tell you today how this Mahamrityunjaya Mantra of Bholenath originated and what are the benefits to human beings by its recitation.

According to some mythology, a sage named Mrikand was an exclusive devotee of Shiva Shankar. He used to worship her a lot. In fact they did not have any children. He knew that if Lord Mahadev, the God of the gods, would be pleased with him, then he would definitely get a child. Considering this in his mind, he did severe penance to please Lord Shiva. And what he wanted happened, Lord Shankar was pleased with his penance and appeared to him. When he asked Mrkand to ask for a boon, the sage asked for a boon to have a son.

Lord Shankar went against the law and gave him the boon of having a son. But Lord Shankar warned him and said that along with this happiness there will be sorrow. The sage Mrikand nevertheless accepted his boon. By the boon of Bhole Shankar, the sage got a son, whom he named Markandeya. When the astrologers saw the horoscope of this child, they told the sage and his wife that this strange child is short-lived, that is, its age is only 12 years.

Hearing this, the sage’s happiness and sorrow changed, but he patiently explained to his wife that the Bholenath who has gifted him to us as a boon, will also protect it. Gradually Markandeya Rishi started growing up, he took initiation of Shiva Mantra from his father. One day his mother was saddened and told her son that he was short-lived. When Markandeya Rishi came to know about this and he took a vow in his heart that he would get the boon of longevity from Bholenath for the happiness and happiness of his parents.

After this he composed a mantra and started reciting this mantra while sitting in Shiva temple. that mantra is- “ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्॥” Which we all know by the name of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. It is believed that when the eunuchs came to pick him up, the child Markandeya was engrossed in the worship of Lord Shankar. So he started waiting for the fulfillment of the resolution of his unbroken chanting. But after a while he returned and told Yamraj that they could not dare to reach the child. On this Yamraj got angry and said that I myself will bring Mrkand’s son and set out to bring him.

When he(Yamraj) reached there, the child Markandeya, chanting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra loudly, hugged the Shivling. Yamraj tried to drag him away from the Shivling, when the temple started trembling with a loud shout and Mahakal appeared from the Shivling. He got angry and said to Yamraj, how did you even dare to disturb the devotee who was absorbed in my sadhana? After which Yamraj Mahakal started trembling with fear of anger, he said – Lord, I am your servant and you have given me the right to kill the living beings.

On hearing this, the anger of the Lord calmed down a bit and he said – yes you are right but I am very happy with the praise of this devotee of mine and I grant him the boon of longevity. That’s why you can’t take it. After this Yama bowing to Lord Shankar said, Lord, your command is paramount. Will I never hurt anyone who is reciting Mahamrityunjaya composed by your devotee Markandeya today? So in this way by the grace of Mahakal, Markendeya got a long life and he composed such a mantra, which can be defeated even by Kaal if recited.
